Researching your Finnish ancestors’ lives can be a daunting task but with the help of this hands-on introductory course, you will learn how to access the primary sources for genealogical research in Finland. The course will also introduce the key concepts of genealogical research in Finland.
This course will provide a brief but systematic overview of the following topics:
— How to carry out genealogical research
— The primary sources for genealogical research in Finland, and how to access them, including church records, government records, court records, maps, immigration, and emigration records.
— Introduction to Finnish archives, genealogical databases, and online resources
— Basic understanding of Finnish history and geography as relevant for genealogical research
— Tools for reading old handwriting
— Finnish names and understanding the onomastic system in Finland
